Drones for Non-Destructive Testing

Persimia is pioneering the use of drones for non-destructive testing (NDT). Currently, non-destructive testing is challenging and expensive to perform in areas that are difficult for personnel to access, like offshore wind turbine blades. Persimia’s TurbInsight NDT drone enables NDT inspections to be performed completely remotely, without personnel having to climb or rappel from tall structures. The TurbInsight drone docks to its inspection target using suction, carries out the contact-based inspection, and returns safely to its landing point. A suite of advanced onboard sensors, as well as operator supervision, enables safe, reliable, and fully-remote NDT inspections. TurbInsight promises to transform NDT inspection for large infrastructure, keeping personnel safer and reducing inspection costs. Watch our demo video here.

Persimia’s TurbInsight drones offer the following features:
  • Modular NDT sensor payload (ultrasound, microwave, etc.)
  • Automated docking and undocking using onboard LIDAR
  • Suction anchors for secure attachment
  • Point and area scans Customization for different scanning needs
  • Operation by a single drone pilot

Aerospace Engineering Consulting

Persimia’s engineers have extensive experience in a variety of engineering domains including flight dynamics, controls, aerodynamics, and statistics, amongst others. Persimia’s engineering consultants are routinely asked to develop complex, multi-physics models that integrate elements of flight dynamic simulation, controls engineering, and risk analysis. Persimia’s engineers draw from, and regularly contribute to, the archival literature on a variety of aerospace modeling and simulation topics. Strong emphasis is placed on model validation and conformance with international standards.

Autonomous Aircraft Design

Drone technology has numerous applications in the renewable energy and wildlife conservation domains, but there is a need for seamless, turn-key solutions with specialized sensors, data processing, and command and control. Persimia engineers have over 35 years of combined experience in drone system development and flight testing. Unlike many drone developers that design fairly generic systems, Persimia closely works with partners such as wildlife consultancies or renewable energy developers to create highly customized, turn-key solutions that seamlessly integrate with existing operations.

Persimia’s drone engineers have particular expertise in:
  • Vehicle configuration selection (multi-rotor, fixed-wing, hybrid, etc.) based on mission requirements
  • Vehicle performance analysis and simulation
  • Vehicle CAD and electronics design
  • Autopilot, autonomy suite, and mission planning software design
  • Vehicle prototyping and construction
  • Flight testing and integration with customer operations
